Our Story

FROM LOCAL CO-OP TO GLOBAL PLAYER

Rooted in Ireland's farming tradition, Kinisla has grown into a global dairy business. For over five decades, we’ve advanced processing, sustainability and nutritional science to take our expertise worldwide.

1972 – 1986

Foundations & Early Ambition

From our co-op roots in Kerry to becoming a publicly listed business, these were the early moves that shaped our organisation.

The Early Vision

In 1972, North Kerry Milk Products was established in Listowel, a bold collaboration between local farmers, the State and international partners determined to create new opportunity for rural Ireland.

Two years later, in 1974, farmers came together to form Kerry Co-operative Creameries, uniting local creameries behind one shared ambition: to add greater value to their milk and build a business that would stand the test of time. From the beginning, innovation, partnership and the courage to do things differently set us apart.

Momentum Takes Hold

Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, Kerry Co-op invested with intent, expanding processing capacity, modernising facilities and building new technical expertise.

What began as a regional co-operative was quickly becoming something far more ambitious, laying the groundwork for a transformational shift in Irish agriculture.

A Bold New Chapter

In 1986, Kerry Co-operative Creameries made a pioneering move by transitioning from a farmer-owned co-op to a publicly listed company: Kerry Group plc.

The flotation (the first of its kind for an Irish co-operative) unlocked the capital needed to accelerate growth, expand internationally and compete on a global stage.

Farmers retained the largest shareholding, ensuring the co-operative remained at the company’s core even as the business entered a new era.

Scaling Through Acquisition

Targeted acquisitions expanded our reach, strengthened our portfolio and built the capabilities to grow further.

Doubling Our Capability

In 2001, the acquisition of Golden Vale doubled our milk pool and significantly expanded our dairy footprint.

It brought together strong regional expertise with modern processing, strengthening our capability and adding leading brands like Cheestrings to our portfolio.

Bringing Everyday Brands To The Table

Our consumer foods business has evolved through focused acquisitions that expanded our capabilities across both own‑label and branded markets.

The acquisition of Matthews Foods in Ossett in 2005 was a key step, opening up the provision of high‑quality own‑label butter and spreads to the UK retail market and establishing a strong platform in own‑label dairy.

This was followed by the acquisition of Breeo Foods in 2008, bringing us closer to the end consumer through the addition of trusted household brands such as Dairygold. Together, these milestones marked a shift beyond manufacturing into supplying consumer products that are trusted and chosen every day.

Deepening Our Cheese Expertise

In 2010, we deepened our expertise in natural cheese through the acquisition of Newmarket Co-operative Creameries, long known for premium cheddar.

It strengthened our capability and positioned us to meet rising global demand for high-quality cheddar and dairy proteins.

Returning To Our Roots

A period of strategic refocus led to the creation of Kerry Dairy Ireland, sharpening alignment across four integrated divisions and returning majority ownership to the farming community.

Strategising For The Future

In 2021, Kerry Group divested its Meats and Meals business to concentrate on its core strengths in taste, nutrition and dairy technology.

This paved the way for the creation of Kerry Dairy Ireland, a refined and future‑focused organisation built around four aligned divisions: Agribusiness, Dairy Ingredients, Nutritional Ingredients, Dairy Consumer Foods. This step reset the business for a new era of innovation, sustainability and strategic clarity.

Five Decades Of Progress

2022 marked 50 years of investment in people, technology, sustainability and capability.

From pioneering casein production to advanced nutritional technologies, across local farms and global markets, our journey has been one shaped by continuous and sometimes relentless transformation.

This milestone was a reminder of how far we’ve come and how much further we intend to go.

Farmers Back At The Heart

In December 2024, Kerry Co-operative Creameries acquired a 70% shareholding in Kerry Dairy Ireland, returning majority ownership to the farmers who began it all in 1972.

It placed the co-operative firmly back at the heart of the business.

The Future

From 2026, the business is stepping into its next era with a new identity: Kinisla.
